there are several ranks in the world of warrior cats: leader, deputy, medicine cat, warrior, queen, elder, senior warrior, apprentice and kit. none of these ranks are for show and you are expected to carry out the duties assigned to the rank your cat holds. this is a simple reference guide to give you the lowdown on what you should be doing, and what you shouldn't. if you're not meant to be doing something, please understand that your leader or deputy, or mentor in the case of apprentices, has the right to punish you as they see fit.

CLAN LEADER
- must maintain discipline, order, and protection. manage the entire clan, organise patrols, call clan meetings and take charge of all decision making.
- granted nine lives from starclan and hold the suffix of -star in replacement of their warrior name. (Eg. Driftfur becomes Driftstar)
- take charge in times of crisis, such as interclan war, invasion or natural disaster.
- can punish any cat within reason.
( this can include being restricted from eating if you ate before feeding your clan. disrespect can be punished by teaching the value of caring for another - such as cleaning dens, a verbal scolding or checking the elders for ticks. in extreme cases, a warrior can be reverted temporarily back to apprentice status and given apprentice tasks under supervision of other warriors, or even exile from the clan for treason. )
- can receive dreams from starclan on the odd occasion, though this happens primarily to medicine cats rather than leaders.

CLAN DEPUTY
- is the cat directly subservient to the leader, but the superior to all other cats aside from the medicine cat. essentially a "leader-in-training" or second in command.
- expected to step up and take charge when the leader is compromised, unfit for duty or deceased.
- must have trained at least one apprentice successfully. should not be a nursing queen, and must be appointed before the first moonhigh upon the former deputy's death or retirement.
- are able to punish other cats for disobedience in the leader's place. deputies sleep in the warrior's den with the warriors and are generally seen as warriors. often called upon for advice from the clan leader, so they are usually trusted and know the clan leader's innermost secrets and weaknesses.

MEDICINE CAT
- clan leaders often rely on them to carry messages from starclan, as medicine cats have a link no other cat has to their warrior ancestors.
- as a healer, they gather herbs and dispense them. they handle diagnosis and treatment of both illness and injury for all the cats in the clan.
- in their role as spiritual leader, they teach the code, interpret omen and prophecy, and generally serve the Clan as a "relay" between the living and the deceased clan cats.
- have their own unique code of conduct. not allowed to fight or have kits, and must treat all cats as equals, regardless of rank, clan, status, etc. in a sense, they should usually be indifferent.

----
WARRIORS
- provide that Clan with the protection and food supply that keeps it safe and well-fed.
- handle most of the training of apprentices, and make up the majority of the clan.
- must be ready to defend their clan, even at the cost of their own lives. usually a cat is made a warrior at twelve moons of age at the earliest.
- once at around the age of 70 moons, a warrior becomes a senior warrior. these are older, respected warriors, mentioned to have a good bond with the Clan's leader. these usually have unspoken authority over the younger warriors, and are usually role models.

APPRENTICES
- warriors or medicine cats in training. are pretty much one of the lowest ranking cats in the clan in that they can be given orders from any cat aside from kits and other apprentices.
- kits are made apprentices at six moons, no matter what path they choose to take. furthermore they swear an oath upon apprenticeship in regard to the path they take. they are assigned a mentor when they come of age.
- are not allowed outside of camp without a warrior escort, or a medicine cat. this rule is rescinded if they are relaying a message as ordered by a warrior or other high ranking cat, or if they are on a mission.
- must pass their assessments before they are allowed to become fully fledged warriors. they must also travel to moonstone with their clan leader at least once.

QUEENS & ELDERS & KITS
- these are warriors who have either retired or sustained a severe injury [elders], are too young [kits] or have become pregnant [queens] and are unable to perform the normal duties of a warrior. elders, however, are tasked with the burial of the deceased members of the clan.
- these are who the warriors must feed first according to the warrior code. they are forbidden to fight because of their status and are to be protected. if warriors are unable to fight, the queens and elders take on the responsibility of protecting the kits.
- not sent on missions or patrols of any kind. if the camp is endangered in any way, the group of three cats take shelter usually in the nursery, which is then protected by warriors.
- queens do not have to tell the clan who fathered her kits, and can choose to remain in the nursery to provide and help other queens. a she-cat with kits may take over the care of another queen's kits if she is not providing milk, rejects the kits, or the mother has died or abandoned them. elders, in the case of old age, are too old to have kits though they do sometimes remain involved with their partner.
