Under the light of the last full moon at a gathering before their warriors, each of the leaders lost a life; a life that cannot be explained. From their higher rock they fell to a heap below their bodies piled like a hill of corpses. No cat living or dead took claim for this horror. The clearing grew frantic and all the clans turned to the Medicine Cats for answers, but they had none. No omens or prophecies had foreseen the loss of five good lives in vein. In a panic, the Deputies led their clans home ending the gathering early and only the Medicine Cats remained to help the Leaders return. When the leaders did one by one awake it was not slowly but in panic. One by one they leapt to their paws, eyes wild and rolling in their heads. They cried out crazed and terrible things. It was as if for a moment they were lost within their own minds and had forgotten who they were. When they came about to recognize their surroundings they remembered nothing. Not the fall, not the crazed words, not even the loss of a life. So what had happened to their spirits before they returned? Who had taken five leaders lives without lifting a paw? The Medicine Cats and their Leaders returned home. Slowly the leaders began to remember. Nightmares so wicked they seemed unreal, visions so vivid they seemed alive. All the Medicine Cats held on to the secret, the truth. The very existence of the clans was on the brink of destruction and until they could figure out how or by whom it was too risky to warn the clans. One thing was for certain: Duskclan, Coveclan, Lunaclan, Emberclan and Grottoclan had no idea that soon they would be fighting for their lives.
